Tutors Needed at the International Community School

Give your time and gain personal development, friendship, and more at the International Community School (ISC).  The ISC is an elementary school for refugee and immigrant students.  This spring, the ISC is looking for GA Tech students to volunteer and to assist the school’s 5th grade students with their annual exhibit.

The exhibit’s trans-disciplinary theme is “Sharing the Planet” which will focus on the central idea that humanity is constantly struggling to resolve conflicts.  The students will be broken up into groups of 4-5 students.  Each group will create a project that explores this theme.  Upon completion, the groups will display their projects.

The project is student driven, but ICS needs volunteers to mentor each group.  The mentors will facilitate the group discussions and guide the students as they pick a project and display.  If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Deanna Lilly.

Stanford Summer Institute for General Management; Apps. due Tues., 1/31

Friday, January 27th, 2012

Business knowledge and management skills are critical assets for success in almost any career.   But college students who major in non-business fields often graduate unprepared to compete in today’s challenging job market and excel in the workplace.

The Stanford Graduate School of Business Summer Institute for General Management (SIGM) can help college undergraduates and recent graduates build the foundation for career success by providing an exclusive opportunity to learn business theory and practice directly from Stanford GSB’s world-class faculty.  Early application deadline is fast approaching and space is limited.

Don’t let your students miss out on these four weeks of intensive learning in residence on our beautiful California campus.  SIGM is an investment with both immediate and long-term returns, including:

  • Development of business knowledge and leadership skills to stand out in a competitive job market
  • Exposure to the content and academic rigor of the Stanford MBA curriculum
  • Faculty coaching to improve resume writing and job interviewing skills
  • Meetings with senior executives from leading companies (and potential employers) from the Silicon Valley and beyond
  • Interaction with diverse participants from around the world to develop a global network of peer professionals

SIGM is specially designed for high-potential college juniors, seniors, and recent graduates (within one or two years) with majors in non-business fields who are interested in acquiring business skills and/or pursuing an MBA degree.  Learn more and download a SIGM brochure

GT Conference Center Hiring for Summer; Apps. due 2/12

Thursday, January 26th, 2012

*****From STAC Senior, Hilary Miskowski:

I work at Georgia Tech Conference Services and am looking for people interested in Summer 2012 jobs here on campus.  I’m in charge of recruitment for GT Conference Services and have been working there since the summer after my freshman year.  Applications end on February 12, 2012.  You can visit  the website  to check it out.

The great thing about it is you get FREE summer apartment housing. We can also usually work out some arrangements when it comes to summer commitments, like classes, FASET leader, RA/PL training, etc.  It’s a great opportunity to stay here at Tech during the summer instead of lugging your apartment stuff to-and-fro every semester.

I would be more than happy to answer any questions you have and email me.   You can also check out the the general GT Conference Services (aka ConfServ) website.

Feel free to spread the word amongst friends and classmates!

Let me know if you have questions!

Lecture on the Black Panther Party by Dr. Alondra Nelson, Wed., 2/1 @ 4

Thursday, January 26th, 2012

HTS is very excited to present our Black History Month Speaker, Dr. Alondra Nelson.  Dr. Nelson is an associate professor of sociology at Columbia University, where she also holds an appointment in the Institute for Research on Women and Gender.  She is co-editor of Technicolor: Race, Technology, and Everyday Life and Genetics and the Unsettled Past: The Collision between DNA, Race, and History.

Dr. Nelson will present a talk based upon her new book:  Body and Soul: The Black Panther Party and the Fight Against Medical Discrimination.

Her talk will address the legacy of the Black Panther Party’s commitment to community health care, a central aspect of its fight for social justice. She argues that the Party’s focus on health care was practical and ideological and that their understanding of health as a basic human right and its engagement with the social implications of genetics anticipated current debates about the politics of health and race.

The talk will take place on Wednesday, the 1st of February at 4.00 pm in the Neely Room of the Georgia Tech Library.  We hope that everyone can come out to hear this very exciting speaker.
